Bushfire
Bushfires are one of Australia’s most serious hazards and threats particularly during the long hot and dry summers. SE Australia is one of the world’s most bushfire prone regions often caused by arsonists, carelessness & lightning. Aborigines traditionally lit bushfires to drive animals out for hunting and regenerating new plant growth. Weather, fuel and terrain all substantially affect bushfires with National Parks and Bushfire Services often conducting ‘controlled burns’ to reduce potential risks. Several recent disastrous bushfires include Ash Wednesday (1983), Eastern Seaboard (including Sydney) (1994), Canberra (2003).
